McGraw Foundation

McGraw Foundation was established by Max McGraw in 1948 for charitable purposes. It was funded by contributions from Mr. McGraw, several family members and friends. The Foundation, headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, makes annual grants to not-for-profit organizations. Primary focus is on higher education, particularly inscientific and environmental fields, and education at all levels. In addition, grants are made to social service agencies, emphasizing those dealing with children. The Foundation also occasionally makes grants in the areas of health, medical research and the arts.

Annually, the Foundation provides financial support to a number of students from the Chicago area through the Max McGraw Educational Assistance Program. Grants are available throughout their university years to selected high school seniors planning a scientific career.

In keeping with the strong interest of Max McGraw in conservation of natural resources and preservation of the environment, the Foundation has made significant grants to the Max McGraw Wildlife Foundation. Moreover, the Foundation has been a pioneer in support of environmental education at the highest level by establishing chaired professsorships as follows:

  • 1989:
Illinois Institute of Technology - Max McGraw Chair in Energy and Power Engineering

  • 1993:
University of Michigan - Max McGraw Professorship of Sustainable Enterprise

  • 1999:
Northwestern University - Max McGraw Chair in Management and the Environment
