During the Wege Lecture at the University of Michigan's Crisler Arena on April 20, the Dalai Lama raised numerous environmental concerns speaking about population control, religious tolerance, consumerism and income disparity. He connected the topics by emphasizing how the promotion of human values and religious harmony is needed in order to take care of humanity's inner environments, cautioning that Even if the environment - the external surroundings - is peaceful and beautiful, unless inner environment is not fully taken care of, the external will not bring inner peace."

Erb MBA/MS students Tony Gross, Jeff LeBrun, and Ali Moazed beat out entries from seven other schools and Universities to win the $20,000 prize for a biodiesel company that will produce a nonfood-based renewable fuel while supporting sustainable development in Africa. The first-ever Wal-Mart sponsored competition challenged student teams to draft and present viable business plans that help conserve energy and preserve the environment.Read More |

Mark Ritz (MSE DBN 75) and his wife Lee Gorman (BBA 79, MBA 83) have established a new charitable remainder trust (CRT) benefiting the Erb Institute, as well as two other University units. As part of the CRT, an endowment has been established to promote knowledge and leadership for the achievement of environmentally, economically and socially sustainable development and enterprise through professional education, public outreach and scientific scholarship. A Dutch native with strong roots in Colombia (having worked there as an Industrial Engineer for over 10 years), Bart van Hoof came to the University of Michigan by way of the Los Andes University Management School in Colombia where he teaches. The school recently obtained a grant from the Moore Foundation to design a program that will train leaders of environmental NGOs, public institutions and environmental managers in private companies in business management and natural studies.
