Staying Connected at Both Schools

To stay on top of the latest happenings, and to get the most out of the program, you need to be plugged into both schools during your entire three years. Don’t forget that as an Erb Institute student, you are entitled to all of the services at the Ross School and SNRE for ALL three years. We strongly recommend those first-year Erb Institute students that start at SNRE take advantage of the Ross School of Business’s computer lab, and its Office of Career Development (OCD) services (such as resume writing, internship-search workshops and mock interviews). Also, don’t forget to keep in touch with Erb Institute faculty and staff. Let them know of your interests and goals. Remember that internships, full-time jobs, and projects are filtered through Erb Institute faculty and staff, so it’s important you get to know them. Some of the additional ways you can stay connected include:

Mail Folders

At the beginning of the year, make sure that you have a mail folder with your name on it at both schools. It is your responsibility to make sure you always have two folders every year that you are here. At the Ross School of Business, your folder will be in the Student Lounge Annex in file cabinets (MBA 1 or MBA 2 cabinet). If you do not have a folder, check with the Erb Institute staff. The student folders at SNRE are in the Dana Commons along the north wall near the Office of Academic Programs (OAP). If you do not have a folder, ask the OAP to make one for you.

Computers

If you start at the Ross School of Business, you will automatically have computer privileges at the Ross School of Business. If you start at SNRE, obtain a Ross School of Business account so that you can use all Ross School of Business facilities (especially the computer lab and the library resources). See Evonne Plantinga (eplan@umich.edu) at the Ross School of Business for access.

We recommend staying on the e-mail lists at both schools throughout your three years so you don’t miss important announcements. At the Ross School of Business, contact the Administrative Office of Computing Services at 763-0462. At SNRE, contact the OAP at 764-6453.

Classes

Taking classes in both schools each semester allows you to keep one foot in each door, and we recommend doing so each semester.

All you need to know about the difference between MBA1’s and MBA2’s

If you spend your first year at RSB, things can get a little complicated. During your first year, you are automatically considered an MBA1. Thus, you will be included in the MBA1 Resume Book, which is sent to summer internship recruiters. But once you are a second year Erb Institute student, you need to change your recruiting status back to MBA1 through the Office of Career Development (OCD). Otherwise, it will change automatically to MBA2. Considering yourself an MBA2 for recruiting purposes when you still have two years left in the MBA/MS Program isn’t very useful since you are not yet available for full-time work. By considering yourself an MBA1 for two years, you’ll get the relevant internship information you need for your second summer, and be all set for full-time recruiting your final year.

Regarding registration - if you start at RSB, your second year as an Erb student can cause some confusion. According to the registration system, you are an MBA 2 - which technically means you wouldn’t be taking classes a third year. Yet in reality, you will be a student for a third year - and chances are, you will want to take Ross School of Business courses. During the winter term of your second year, make sure you let Renee Peterson know you need to be switched back to MBA1 status for registration purposes. That way, you will be allowed to register for courses to be taken during the fall of your third year.

Note: If you begin the program at the School of Natural Resources & Environment, none of the above applies to you, since you will automatically be spending your second year of the MBA/MS Program as an MBA1.

Take advantage of the Erb Institute’s office too! There are three student computers and space to use your laptop. We also have a copy machine, a phone/fax machine, and a conference area, as well as newspapers, magazines, books, course guides - and treats!
Social Events

The Ross School has numerous organized events and clubs to get involved in. SNRE has a weekly happy hour at Leopold Brothers Brewery on Main Street, and many private parties that are posted over e-mail. Get to know your fellow classmates by attending these events! Networking is invaluable and keeps you better connected than anything. Net Impact, an organization at the Ross School of Business, is a good way for first-year Erb Institute students starting at SNRE to become plugged in to the Ross School of Business. Also, joining Transformers is a good way for those starting at RSB to become involved and connected at SNRE.
