Final Checklists

Earning degrees from two schools means you have to keep track of more than the average graduate student, and it can also be challenging to remember to take advantage of all the great opportunities the MBA/MS Program has to offer. Below are handy checklists (one for each year of the program) to help you make sure you get the most out of the program.

YEAR 1

Fall Semester

  • Get to know Erb Institute faculty and staff, External Advisory Board (EAB) members, and Erb Institute alumni and students, as well as traditional students and faculty at both schools.

  • Stop by and introduce yourself to the Ross School of Business’s Chief Financial Aid Officer if you haven’t already done so, even if you are a first-year at SNRE. Chances are, you will be talking to him a lot over the next three years!

  • Get to know the Ross School of Business’s Registrar, and the Director of Academic Services at SNRE. These are two of the most important people with whom you will work. They decide on waivers, registration, and ultimately, if you have fulfilled your degree requirements at both schools—in other words, if you graduate!

  • Talk to other Erb Institute students to find out about what courses and professors they recommend so you can start planning what classes to take during your second year.

  • Start thinking about your internship search.

  • Apply for scholarships for your second year.

  • Stop by the Erb Institute office, where there are publications, newspapers, computers, a fax machine, phones, water, and treats!

Winter Semester

  • Talk to other Erb Institute students to find out about what courses and professors they recommend so you can start planning what classes to take during your second year.

  • Attend the pizza parties at SNRE held for students in order to learn more about the classes offered the following year. Watch for the announcements over e-mail and in your SNRE mail folder.

  • Practice interviewing, through mock interviews at the Ross School of Business, and with friends.

  • Stay connected to your e-mail account over the summer.

YEAR 2

Fall Semester

  • Continue talking to other Erb Institute students to find out about what courses and professors they recommend so you can start planning what classes to take during your second year.

  • In September, and again in April, set up appointments with Renee Peterson and Jennifer Perkins to conduct an academic audit. This will help you assess which requirements you have fulfilled, and which courses you still need to complete. DO NOT wait until your third year to do your first audit. Completing the MBA and MS requires careful planning.

  • Apply for scholarships/GSI’s for your third year.

  • Start thinking about your internship search.

  • November – When RSB course bidding opens, be sure you are in the system and can bid problem-free.

Winter Semester

  • Practice interviewing, through mock interviews at the Ross School of Business, and with friends.

  • Take care of the administrative details of course waivers. For example, you need to get course waivers for your Ross School of Business Core economics and statistics signed over at the School of Natural Resources to avoid having to take these requirements again at SNRE. Talk to Jennifer Perkins in the Office of Academic Programs for the appropriate forms. Keep copies of these signed documents.

  • If you started in the Ross School of Business last year, make sure to switch yourself back to MBAI status. See the Office of Career Development at the Ross School of Business.

  • Continue talking to other Erb Institute students to find out about what courses and professors they recommend so you can start planning what classes to take during your third year.

  • Apply for scholarships for your third year. Follow up on GSI opportunities.

  • Stay connected to your e-mail account over the summer.

YEAR 3

Fall Semester

  • Get a copy of The Rackham Dual Degree Course Elections Form at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies, and go see Renee Peterson and Jennifer Perkins again. This form must be completed and signed by both Renee and Jennifer in order for you to graduate. Although this form doesn’t need to be completed until March or so, it’s smart to go in the Fall and assess any loose ends that may exist… while you still have time to fix them!

  • Like last year, take care of the administrative details of course waivers.

Winter Semester

  • Be sure to fill out your blue graduation card at BOTH schools! You cannot graduate without it.

  • Check with the Erb Institute staffers for graduation gowns, hoods, and caps for reuse.

  • Hold the Monday-Wednesday after graduation open for the annual program camping trip.

  • RSB graduation is traditionally at 6pm in Crisler Arena the last Friday in April. The SNRE graduation ceremony is the last Saturday in April, mid-day.

  • When you leave UM, be sure to leave your new contact information with the Erb Institute staff and keep in touch with them. Check your online info and be sure to forward your new contact information to both the Ross School of Business and SNRE.
