Kate Napolitan Erb
06 (Ford Motor
Company, Summer 04)
During my summer
internship at Ford
Motor Company, I had
the opportunity to
work on many
exciting projects.
First, I piloted the
Global Reporting
Initiative's new
facility level
reporting tool, the
Facility Reporting
Project (FRP). The
FRP is a
60-indicator
plant-level
reporting tool, used
to determine
manufacturing
plants' effect on
communities and
environment. Second,
I conducted a
benchmarking
analysis against
other leading
automotive companies
in the area of
environmental
responsibility. The
results of this
analysis informed
the development of a
senior management
communication
strategy. Finally, I
researched and
prepared twelve
country briefs in
support of Ford's
Code of Working
Conditions,
outlining human
rights issues and
existing rule of law
in emerging markets.
The wide variety of
projects on which I
worked helped me to
more clearly define
the type of career I
hope to have after
graduation. I am
grateful to Ford
Motor Company for
the opportunity to
work with them and
learn from their
experiences. I am
particularly
grateful to David
Berdish whose
ongoing support and
encouragement has
made it a wonderful
time to be an MBA/MS
Program student!
Emily Collings- Erb 05 (Weyerhaeuser, Summer 04)
I instantly
noticed the
Weyerhaeuser
internship
description last
year relating to
sustainability
reporting -- it
seemed like a
perfect match for my
interests and career
goals. Luckily for
me, they thought I
was a good fit as
well. I spent my
summer in the
Environmental,
Health and Safety
office, which
manages
Weyerhaeuser's
two-year old
sustainability
report. I
benchmarked best
practices in
sustainability
reporting and
developed a proposal
for enhancements to
the company's
sustainability
report. The company
also supported my
development in other
areas. For example,
when I expressed an
interest in seeing
their business
operations, I was
invited to
participate in an
environmental audit
of a pulp mill in
British Columbia.
Throughout the
summer, EAB Member
Donna Brown was
supportive of my
work and helped to
introduce me to
others within the
company. It was a
great learning
opportunity and
experience for me
So
much so that I am
returning to
Weyerhaeuser full
time as an
Environmental
Manager, where my
responsibilities
will include
implementing many of
my recommendations
for their
sustainability
report. I can truly
say that none of
this would have been
possible without the
Erb Institute and
Weyerhaeuser's
involvement in the
program - so thank
you to both
organizations!
Jon Forrester Erb
05 (Sustainable
Conservation, Summer
04)
I spent my summer
in San Francisco
"mapping" the value
chain of the
California
horticulture
industry for
Sustainable
Conservation
(http://www.suscon.org/),
a "practical,
collaborative,
solution driven
non-profit that
works with
businesses,
government, and
non-governmental
organizations to
solve critical
environmental
problems." The
purpose of the
assessment was to
determine how the
industry's financial
performance is
linked to the
introduction of
invasive species and
to identify the
stakeholders who
should be involved
in industry-wide
initiatives. By
evaluating industry
structure, buying
power, revenue
drivers, market
growth, and consumer
preference, to name
a few, I was able to
recommend places for
intervention. The
staff at Sustainable
Conservation -
particularly Ashley
and Sarah - are
among the most
committed,
intelligent, and
supportive with whom
I've worked. Thanks
guys. |
